Home Security During the Winter Months

As you are preparing your house and yard for the winter, take the opportunity to look at it from a security point of view. What are the potential criminals seeing as they look at your home? Will you be out of town over the holidays? What windows are blocked by landscaping? Do all of your lights work? Are deliveries left on your doorstep during the day, possibly with obviously expensive items inside? Can your house numbers be seen from the street during the day and also at night? Are there areas in your neighborhood
that should be reported to the city or the homeowner’s association?

Do you have elderly or disabled neighbors who may need assistance in improving the security of their homes, or possibly need someone to check on them during the winter? For many more tips, check out the Crime Prevention link on the city website,

http://www.vbgov.com/government/departments/police/opsdiv (Click on Crime Prevention) or call the Crime Prevention Unit directly at 385-1006.
